Camp McCurry, Business Staff

The start of 2010 and the Spring semester undoubtedly bring changes of all kinds for students. Different schedules, new classmates, spring sports–hopefully all positive developments that make the last half of the academic year more enjoyable. In keeping with this spirit of introduction and my ambition to reveal local dining gems, I would like to present, for your future enjoyment, Mr. Lu’s Chinese Restaurant.

Mr. Lu’s is not a new restaurant, but one that not many have tried, according to the WFU students I’ve spoken to. Since outside of pizza and beer Chinese food is typically considered a staple of the stereotypical college student’’s diet, you ought to be aware of this spot on Robinhood Road.

The menu at Mr. Lu’s is much larger than their small building space in Robinhood Plaza allows you to believe; there are well over a dozen food categories, including many appetizers, several types of fried rice, chow mein or chop suey, lo mein, pork, chicken, beef, seafood and egg foo young. Additionally, Mr. Lu’s offers Szechuan, Hunan and Cantonese, as well as chef specialties. Obviously it depends on your palate, but most items typically run from five to nine bucks, plus tax. Mr. Lu’s also offers a list of almost 30 lunch specials for only $4.35.

I often recommend ordering something from the final portion of the menu, Special Combination Plates. These plates include over 20 classic options such as sweet and sour, moo goo gai pan, and my favorite, sesame chicken. Each plate will only set you back about six to eight bucks and includes pork fried rice and an egg roll. Everyone that I’ve taken to Mr. Lu’s has adopted it as their new Chinese restaurant.

The one drawback is that Mr. Lu’s is take-out only. While it’d be great if they could deliver to campus and nearby apartments, the couple of turns off of Silas Creek is worth it. Take the chance, break the norm and try a spot outside of the bubble.
