Don’t let the name fool you, Wings To Go is most definitely the kind of restaurant where you’ll want to dine-in. Located on University Parkway, not far from LJVM Coliseum, Wings To Go is a small, family eatery with an open atmosphere and friendly staff. Even though it’s a relatively new establishment to Winston-Salem, everyone inside seemed to know each other and the wait staff greeted incoming customers by name.

Upon entering, I was welcomed by a waiter and shown a menu. Choosing to have the wings was easy, choosing which flavor was a different story. Wings To Go boasts seventeen different sauces for their wings. These sauces range from standards like BBQ and Honey Mustard to those that are a little more adventurous, like Garlic Parmesan and Lemon Pepper. After much deliberation, and a little help from my new waiter-friend, I chose the Honey Mustard and the Teriyaki.

One problem I’ve always had with “wing restaurants” is the lack of variety on the menu. After all, just how many ways can you possibly prepare a chicken wing? At Wings To Go, I was excited to see that the menu also included a large selection of sandwiches, wraps, and appetizers. They seem to be particularly proud of their Buffalo Shrimp, which they also serve with your choice of sauce. There’s also an interesting dish called Garbage Fries. I was informed by a very enthusiastic fellow customer that these were the best thing on the menu. It seems that, at Wings To Go, you can get your fries covered with chili, cheese, sour cream, olives, and anything else you could imagine.

Wings To Go also has four televisions, one of them a flatscreen, each showing different sports games. While waiting for my food, I was able to cheer on the Wake Forest football team with other customers. Other diners even struck up conversations with me about the game. This “sports bar camaraderie” made the wait for my wings a lot more enjoyable.

My order arrived within ten minutes of ordering. The wings were good, though nothing much to write home about (the Honey Mustard sauce was a little overwhelming). But the mundane food was offset by the overall amiable nature of the restaurant. The prices are reasonable ($6 for 10 wings), which is a plus for hungry students on a budget. Wings To Go is a great restaurant for a quick dinner before a football or basketball game, or just as a fun alternative to campus dining.
