There are some warning signs to look out for when it comes to restaurants. For example, one does not often think to dine in a restaurant that is attached to a hotel – often thought to be located within the lobby and known as “The Continental Breakfast” spot. WS Prime, however, defies this stigma.
The restaurant, located in downtown Winston Salem, is next to the Marriott and matches the hotel’s approach to fine service. Have your car parked by the complimentary valet and step into a restaurant that offers the best steaks in town (since the unfortunate demise of Frankie Rowland’s).
Upon entering WS Prime, one cannot help but notice the swanky cocktail lounge, usually half-full with a mixture of local patrons and hotel guests. The restaurant booths really give you an idea about what you’re in store for. Most of the tables in WS Prime are gigantic wing-backed 1940’s booths that the diner can recognize from the mafia movies. This seating is roomy and private – perfect for selecting a signature cocktail or wine, which can be ordered by the glass or bottle. WS Prime has an extensive list of close to 100 choices, as well as a reserve list including Dom Perignon and Krug Vintage 1988 French Champagne.
Although service can lag a bit, the food is well worth the wait. Most steaks are aged USDA prime beef, while the rest are Angus, like the Filet Mignon (8 and 12 oz., $30-$38), which is a worthy indulgence. I also suggest you try the garlic mashed potatoes, a classic that WS Prime has perfected and will probably change your life. On the lighter side, the Seared Sea Bass Fillet ($28) is incredible as well. Drizzled in a balsamic glaze and served with fresh vegetables, this entree is a wonderful alternative that won’t have you clamoring for the elliptical machine the next day.
Despite the glamorous blue-blood feeling of the restaurant (Oysters Rockefeller, anyone?), there are a few drawbacks. The management should note that the Friday and Saturday night jazz musicians should not take 45 minute breaks between 20 minute sets. The service can also be a bit slow, as I’ve already mentioned, even when there are few other diners in the restaurant. The manager encourages all guests and diners to come as they are, but you might feel a bit underdressed in jeans.
While WS Prime may not fit everyone’s taste, this restaurant has a lot to offer, especially with that ill-fated, mass-hated (or greatly under-appreciated) holiday slowly creeping up. Reserve a Valentine’ Day dinner (price upon request), and WS Prime will take care of the rest, including appetizer, salad, entrée, and dessert, with a glass of wine or champagne. Visit their website This text to reserve a table online, because this classy steakhouse may fill up before long.
