Searching for a nice place to take your parents, out with a date, or to impress your friends? Look . . . further. Bon Appetit Deli and Cafe leaves much to be desired both in cleanliness and good food.
Parking is also an issue – the closest parking area of any magnitude is on Liberty Street, perpendicular to Fourth Street. It will cost two dollars if you stay between one and two hours.
A friend and I strolled in on a weekday for lunch. Bon Appetit is a walk up to the counter, order, and seat yourself type of place. It has a Jordanian themed atmosphere, with drapes hanging from the walls and Jordanian music playing from a corner television. A rather confused ethnicity results from Jordanian proprietors with the restaurant’s French name and Italian food.
The cuisine ranges from subs, Stromboli and calzones, to various Italian plates and desserts. Hamburgers start the prices at $1.99, and a large Stromboli tops the list at $10.00. Beverages include Pepsi products, water, tea and coffee. For vegetarians, there are options such as vegetarian Stromboli and pizza, in addition to various other offerings.
Allergic to smoke? This venue is not for you. The entire restaurant, consisting of about 10 tables, allows smoking. They do serve hookah, which might be the saving grace of the establishment. While the service is quick and comes with a smile, the tables are of questionable cleanliness, the bathroom toilet didn’t flush, and the Pepsi machine spits at customers.
I ordered the shrimp basket (why? I am still asking myself). The shrimp was fairly standard, and the ordinary sauce with it was rather good. My friend ordered a steak and cheese sub on a hoagie and commented, “Well, the bread is good. . . .” Needless to say, we ate as quickly as possible, hoping to escape without severe damage to our lungs.
Leaving, we ordered cheesecake to go, which actually looked and tasted pretty good. The sole reason I am giving Bon Appetit Deli and Cafe two stars was the cheesecake, which likely was not made in-house. As we walked out, my friend asked, “Umm, can we make a stop at Cook-Out on the way back to campus?”
