Located by a bridge overpass and standing alone in the center of a parking lot, Grecian Corner is the definition of a hole-in-the-wall establishment. But its low prices (entrees under $8) and local reputation for quality Greek cuisine have kept George Ballas' restaurant going strong since 1970.
It's the oldest Greek restaurant in Winston-Salem and remains a fixed landmark. In fact, Hollywood liked the look of the rustic, two-room restaurant so much that scenes from the 1990 movie Mr. Destiny, starring James Belushi, were shot here.
Recently in 2002, Ballas' nephew and nephew's wife took over operations at Grecian Corner; sadly, Mr. Ballas passed away in 2008 in his native Greece. Although there's been a change in management, the place still has its cozy charm.
But let's put nostalgia aside and face facts. If Grecian Corner didn't serve good and diverse food, the place would be bulldozed in a nanosecond.
The four salads on the menu are fresh, and the standard Greek can be ordered as an appetizer ($3.15) or entree ($5.25). A Chef ($5.25) and Cranberry Pecan with blue cheese ($6.19) only come in the large size.
Sandwiches are under $5.25 and served on a bun or honey wheat bread. It's an extra buck for a hoagie or pita bread, but definitely worth it if you get the gyro (pronounced "year-ro," $3.45).
Other sandwiches include a fish sandwich ($3.20), turkey club ($5.25), Reuben ($5.05), corned beef and Swiss ($4.60), and chicken parmesan hoagie ($4.85). And that's not even half of the listings on the menu. For vegetarians, there's even a veggie pita ($3.95). You can check out the full menu here.
For a heavier Italian fare, there's pizza and pasta, including various spaghetti dishes, chicken or veal parmesan, and lasagna. You can add a side salad to any pasta dish for a reduced amount (chopped salad $1.75, Greek salad $2.25).
A large space of the menu is reserved for Grecian specialties, including souvlaki, gyro, mousaka, and spanakopita. The gyro is a tasty sandwich with lamb meat, onion, tomato and tzaziki sauce. Order a large helping of feta on the sandwich for only $0.55.
The best part about Grecian Corner is its sauces, especially the tzaziki sauce and ranch dressing. Paired with side orders of fries ($1.55), onion rings ($3.55), or sweet potatoe chips ($2.99), the ranch dressing has brought renown to the restaurant.
All deserts, including cheesecake ($3.25), baklava ($1.80), and pies ($1.80), are homemade.
As an established local favorite, Grecian Corner continues to serve up tasty meals from a time-tested kitchen. Visit this restaurant at least once during your time at Wake, and you won't be disappointed, especially with its prices and broad menu selection.
Also, bring your purse change with you when you go, because the restaurant only accepts cash!
