It seems inevitable that as my group of friends and I walk towards the Pit, someone groans “Ugh, I'm so tired of the Pit! Can we eat off campus?” I feel guilty complaining since our parents have paid for our meal plan, but who can blame us? Turkey sandwiches and mashed potatoes get to be a bit redundant after eating three meals a day there for four months straight.
But, is the Pit REALLY that bad? I remember at the beginning of freshman year, the Pit was like heaven. I was overwhelmed by the amount of food choices, the all day desert station and the fact that I could eat as much as I wanted, whenever I wanted. Recently, though, this awe has faded and I find myself dreading my daily lunches. I get frustrated thinking about my future of yet another bowl of strawberry yogurt with granola.
However, this frustration wanes once I realize that it is chicken fajita day! I have to admit that I love the Pit’s chicken fajitas. They are so filling and I appreciate the wide range of topping selections such as jalapenos and sour cream. The side choices of rice and beans are also a nice addition, a welcomed change from the daily grind of green beans and french fries.
After asking around, I found that many students also have their favorites at our beloved Pit. Sophomore Jill Sauchelli explained that she eats at the "new and improved sandwich station" almost everyday. I found this comment to be a common response while doing research for this article. This year the sandwich station added not only more meat options such as roast beef and chicken, but also vegetarian options like hummus and a pimento cheese spread. Additionally, they are now equipped with numerous condiments and a Panini grill. Sauchelli also added that she enjoys when they have chicken as an option on the salad bar.
Jennifer Skovira, a sophomore transfer from Boston University, noted that she loves the Pit overall. She claims is it "way better than Boston's" cafeteria and that "there is a wide selection of both healthy and not healthy foods."
Freshman Chelsea Ruskoski also commented on the healthy food selection. She exclaimed, very enthusiastically, that she likes the new vegetarian section's sauteed vegetable options and the new sandwich station.
Although I didn't find anyone who said they would actually miss the Pit over the summer, there did seem to be an overall positive attitude towards it. So, I guess I'll walk with a little more bounce in my step as I head towards dinner tonight. Especially if it's chicken fajita day!
