Has organic chemistry or Philosophy 111 sucked all the happiness and humor out of your life? Have you not smiled in a week and are you jealously reading away messages wishing you had a fun life? The cure for the second semester blues is only a thirty-five minute drive away. The location is Comedy Zone in Greensboro, and the activity for the night is an evening full of laughs.
Comedy Zone, a local comedy club off 41, is a cubby of political incorrectness, offensiveness, and laughter. The dimly light club consists of a small stage, multiple small tables with candles, and a bar. After paying the $9 cover, a waitress seats your group at a table and provides you with a drink and food menu. The drink menu is quite extensive, and there is a small selection of snack foods.
The show starts with in-house host Chris Wiles warming up the audience with corny jokes. The first act follows. The format of the show is upfront standup comedy. The first act was off color and highly offensive, but somewhat funny. Comedy Zone is probably not the best place to venture with a date, or with someone who is highly sensitive to offensive material. Gender, race, religion, and political beliefs are all mocked. With laughter flowing, the second act, usually the headline, follows. The headlining acts are usually fairly well known comedians or comedians who tour regularly. Audience interaction is encouraged, but it is in your best interest to pay attention because the comedians like to pick out individuals in the audience and make fun of them.
Overall Comedy Zone is a fun place, and a good break from the usual Wake Forest activities. Stand-up comedy is classic, and the lounge atmosphere suits well for this type of humor. Next time you are feeling blue, hop on 41 and head down to Comedy Zone.
