Make the Most of Your Summer

As college students, our first instinct is to spend the summer catching up on lost sleep and handing out with old friends. This near four month vacation also allows for working, traveling, and volunteering, however. So, here is a quick guide to help you get a jump start on a productive summer while, of course, having some fun along the way!

Although jobs nowadays seem to be few and far between, there are many ways to score a great summer job or internship. First, search for local restaurants or companies who are hiring, either by driving around town to pick up applications or using an internet source, such as college helpers. If you are lucky, you may be able to try to land an internship with a connection through your parents' friends, neighbors, or relatives. Keep an updated copy of your resume to make the application process easier. If the position you are applying for requires an interview, ensure you are prepared to answer questions about yourself and the job, look and act professionally, and show interest by explaining why you are a perfect candidate.

Once you have gotten a job, it is important to maintain a good work ethic and an enthusiastic attitude. Lindsey Pollak, an accomplished author and expert in workplace issues, says to "recognize that school is different than work." Therefore, missing a deadline during your internship can hold greater consequences than handing in a late homework assignment. She also points out that interns should step outside of their comfort zone. "Challenge yourself to push the boundaries, especially your own. Such a quality goes hand-in-hand with being proactive," Pollack says.

Now it's time for some summer fun! After the work week, take a weekend trip with your friends. Try an outdoor activity, like white water rafting in Maine, sight-seeing in New York, or playing golf in Arizona. Depending on your summer budget, perhaps indulge on a week-long vacation in Europe with your family or friends. Or if a destination vacation isn't quite feasible, you could always resort to a good old-fashioned spa weekend near your hometown. No matter what you choose to do, spending some time kicking back and relaxing is always important after working hard during the week. Remember to pack lightly for these excursions, especially if you are traveling on a plane, as most airlines charge hefty fees for extra luggage. Just include the basic clothes, shoes, and toiletries (don't forget sunscreen!) and you'll be ready to go.

If your budget doesn't allow for a vacation, volunteering in a local area is a great alternative. Sources such as volunteer match and network for good consider your personal preferences while offering opportunities to work with organizations in your community. You can also check your local newspaper for volunteer postings or updates on surrounding non-profit organizations. Keep in mind the type of volunteering you would like to participate in as well as the amount of time required. Even if you only spend two days a week volunteering, it may be just enough to break up the drone of simple summer activities and make you feel like you accomplished something with you time.

No matter what you may choose to do with your time this summer the most important thing is to enjoy the time off. So whether you're in the midst of a job or internship, volunteering, or globe-trotting, make sure you are getting the most out of these precious summer months! Because let's face it, we'll be back to hitting the books all too soon.
