The True Story of Freddie B's

For all of you that helped celebrate the last week of the popular local bar Freddie B’s being open, this article is for you. I know many of you reading are wondering what in the world is going to happen to the staple Wake Forest bar. I got the chance to talk with the owner and proprietor of the bar, Freddie B himself, and he cleared up many aspects of the closing and re-opening for we the confused.

The conversation started off with a re-cap of Freddie B’s last night on Wednesday. He had a lot to say about that night and it seemed rather epic. He also told me about a bunch of stuff that was stolen from the bar, including the neon “Freddie B” sign and a picture of a hockey team from behind the counter near the kitchen where the trophies were kept. To the person that took it, the coach of the hockey team was a good friend of his, and he would like the picture back if at all possible.

Anyway, many of you are probably curious about what will become of the future of the bar that has given so many students at our beloved school something to do on Wednesday nights as well as on the weekends. The man who leased the bar to Freddie B was bought out by Wake Forest University. Wake Forest has recently been buying up a lot of property in an attempt to further develop the area into what will be known as Deacon Boulevard. The university hopes that the new Deacon Boulevard will be able to compete with Chapel Hill’s famous Franklin Street. The deal was apparently a good one, as the man who leased the property to Freddie B is now moving to another part of the country.

Have no fear Wake Forest, because all of this is only temporary as Freddie is looking to re-open the bar. Where, you ask? He is looking to purchase property right near where the bar sits now on University Parkway across from the Joel Coliseum. He is in negotiation with the owner of "Wings to Go" and says that he is hoping that he can keep the bar “on the block.” There are slight problems with the deal, however, as the owner of the wings restaurant is not looking to sell the property and would rather lease it out. Freddie B is hoping to have the situation cleared up and to be moved in as early as August 2008. As of right now, Freddie B has assured me that it is 98% likely that the bar will be moving to this location and is hoping it will be ready for the coming semester.

I would like to thank Rachel Stekson for her help in reaching Freddie B so I could get this article to all of you. Good luck with finals and enjoy your summer without worry, because the bar should be back in business when we return!
